Tim Carruthers

Tim has been blowing glass for more than 5 years. He first apprenticed in San Francisco, with a friend who taught him simple design, and technique. After his short apprenticeship, Tim was eager to explore the possibilities of glass as an artistic medium. He drew inspiration from traditional Italian forms, and German Montage patterns, which he was exposed to predominately through local gallery exhibitions. After a year of working with just one other artist, Tim moved to Seattle to join a larger community of glass blowers. Not long after arriving, he found a number of other artists with a similar cooperative vision. Together they started one of the largest Flame working collectives in the nation, GlassworksPark.

Tim continues his education through collaborative projects with fellow artists, as well as attending summer sessions at Pilchuck School of Glass.

Tim’s enthusiasm for glass has opened doors for him in teaching as well. Having taught and demoed at many different events across the country, he hopes someday to open his own teaching facility.

“Ever since I started blowing glass, I have been inspired by both the precision and control of patterns, and the fluidity of the medium. Glass is organic and fluid, and at the same time can be manipulated and controlled. Using heat and gravity to transform a glowing mass into a finished form, is an incredible feeling. It has helped me understand my life and goals, to see my own reflection in the glass.”
